Diamonds in Baltimore

Often in life we pass by people all the time never knowing what talents and gifts they possess and this can go for different locations as well. Every city in the world has something very unique about them. They usually have these hidden gems that many of us never knew about. I guess we can say that about good ole Baltimore, the city that is known for its love of seafood. In recent years the city has been rising to the new “hip” place for the young and old. But mostly the new scene is the art scene. There are a lot of hidden diamonds that are now being exposed and brought to light in the city. They are finally being seen, instead of unseen.

In branching out, and taking the initiative I went on the prowl in looking for some diamonds that were hidden. As searching and looking I came across former Notre Dame College student Holly Miller. A true Baltimorean I had the opportunity to get to interview her, and take a sneak peek into her life. She has been exposed to so much art, and music that it is amazing to see her still in a humble state, and what she really truly loves as person.

"If you can be happy while you're cleaning a bathroom or doing something unpleasant, you can be happy doing anything!"

Beautiful, skilled, and talented Holly Miller was born and raised in Baltimore. She grew up in a house full of art, and music at a very young age. Both her mother and grandmother were former piano teachers who taught children the same age as Holly when she was growing up. She states that she was learning will all the other kids, and that being around them it pushed her to be better.  As she grew up she found other outlets of art such as, photography, music, and modeling as well.  At the age of 19 she met Jeremy Santucci who later exposed her to another world of photography and art. “He modeled for Ford Models, and has done editorial work with Steven Meisel; plus campaigns that have been feature in Vogue magazine”, she states. In meeting him she has been open to many opportunities within the photography, and fashion industries.

Alongside doing modeling and photography, Holly has also dived into the music scene. With producing and writing her own track she manages to get her name out there. In the last year she has team up director Jeff Hutchens to create a visual aid for her song Lazy Love. Asked if she would ever put out an album one, she claims that she would possibly, but not right at this moment in her life when some many things are happening and going.

In addition, she was ask on what her thoughts were on the new art movement that is going on in Baltimore, and was she proud to be known as Baltimorean? “There are tons of great artist in the Baltimore city area, and that is all about finding and locating them” she states as well as being 100% proud to be from Baltimore.  “It is so innovative” she adds.

"Having a career that allows me to be healthy and balanced"

In a world and industry so competitive, how does one stay positive? Holly gives her own insight on how to stay positive in a world that is so demanding and chaotic. She states that in her last year of college she was doing jobs searchers that would fit the needs that she was looking for. She wanted to work in an environment where she could freely be herself, and be able to work plus enjoy her time while being there.

At the time she states that she wanted to be surrounded by creative, passionate and happy people. The place in which she receives a position at was TATU restaurant. “TATU was going for a concept that was interesting to me” said after being informed of the position through a friend. After interviewing for the position she was offered a position in marketing and events with one TATU sushi and bar restaurant located in downtown Baltimore

In addition she states that making list of things that are good to maximize what you need in order to stay positive, and happy; plus making them work in reality.  She believes that living a healthy lifestyle will also contribute to staying and living positive as well. “Putting different substances into your body that are not nourishing will make you look and feel terrible in the long run”, she said.

In knowing just that, it is concluded that a majority of the cities around the world have talented people who love what they do. Coming from a city where the only thing that is talk about is violence is an awesome breakthrough. If we take the time to find these hidden gems that are lurking about in our cities, we have the chance to support them and show the world a piece of us. Every city has something that needs to be shared with the rest of the world, and as citizen we need to let them be seen instead of unseen.

"I believe the best way to stay positive is to surround yourself with positive people and circumstances"

In the end I asked one final question that I thought would be perfect to ask any true artist, what makes you love what you do? In asking this I am able to better understand the artist on where they are coming from as a person in their walk of life. She claims that you have to do something that you love because life is too short to not enjoy yourself.

She also adds that there are certain responsibilities that often get in the way that can hinder one form actually taking pleasure in loving what they are doing. She states that she went to this event called Kadampa Buddhism in Baltimore. It was a course that taught it students to always love what they are doing. The philosophy behind it was that no matter what you are doing just be happy in doing it.And in that statement Holly Miller is doing what she loves the most being creative.

Holly Miller currently resides in Baltimore where she is working at TATU, and teaching piano lessons to student’s all the while managing H&J photography.
